Contact Lens Care

Two general types of contact lens :

- Soft

- Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP)

 Soft Contact Lens

They are usually disposable and can be discarded after a short period of use (ie. Dailies, Bi-Weekly or Monthly). A fresh pair of contact lens would mean less chance of eye infection, less cleaning, and more comfort, especially for people whose eyes naturally produce more protein that clouds lens. Made from soft plastic, soft contact lens are very comfortable as they hold more water than rigid gas permeable lens. Many of the new materials provide ultraviolet (UV) protection. While most people choose soft lens because of their benefits, there are also some disadvantages. Soft lenses easily absorb pollutants such as lotion or soap from your hands that can irritate your eyes. They are also more fragile than hard lenses and can rip or tear while cleaning them.

Rigid gas permeable (RGP)

Being more rigid than soft lens, RGP lens are hence more durable for an active user. They are made of silicone polymers, allowing oxygen to circulate to the cornea of the eye. RGPs maintain their shape better and offer clearer vision with certain types of corrections. They are also extremely durable and easy to take care of. Deposits from tears and outside irritants are not as easily absorbed as compared to soft contact lens.
